A farm that was turned into a sanctuary – Former dairy farmer Jan Gerdes and animal rights activist Karin Mück are the founders of Hof Butenland. There is no livestock here, just rescued farmed animals who now enjoy a peaceful coexistence that seems almost utopian.
"Butenland" tells the story of two people who focus on the needs of the animals, far from any economic interests. Filmmaker Marc Pierschel accompanied the two of them on Butenland Farm for more than two years with his camera. The intimate portrait captures moments of happiness and sadness, questions the current status of farm animals in our society and leaves everyone touched.

Butenland is the name of the project, where cattle are allowed to live free from the constraints of farm animals. Filmmaker Marc Pierschel shows this as an idyll, even a utopia, without wagging the big moral finger. – Süddeutsche Zeitung
Hof Butenland is not simply an idyll, but resistance with all its consequences. A film that hurts a bit because it makes your conscience vibrate. – ZDF Heute Journal
A film that invites to rethink and celebrates love and life - of man and animal. – WDR Westart
Neither the filmmaker nor his two protagonists pretend that this place of mercy is the solution to every conceivable problem, from factory farming to climate change. In quiet shots, the film comes very close to its people and animals. – Filmdienst
