Sale Of The Sea

Ausverkauf der Meere

Tropical mussels and snails are not only pretty holiday souvenirs. They are part of a million euro industry.

But where do they come from and why can they be bought cheaply in decoration shops in Germany?

Most of the animals come from the Philippines. On the island of Cebu alone, the mussel industry has an annual turnover of 28 million euros. 30 tons a day are exported from there for decades. A legal business with devastating consequences.
