Roundup, der Prozess
Official film description
Roundup® is the most widely sprayed plant protection product in the world. Forty years after its market introduction, its active substance glyphosate was classified as probably carcinogenic to humans. Against the backdrop of the decision to ban glyphosate in the European Union, this documentary goes to the root of the scandal.
In 2014 alone, 825,000 tonnes of the powerful herbicide glyphosate were applied to fields and gardens. There is a great deal of concern about the dangers posed by the world's most widely sprayed plant protection product since the International Agency for Cancer Research decided in March 2015 that Glyphosat in was probably a carcinogen for humans and thus came to a completely different conclusion than that of the large American and European health authorities, which concluded that Monsanto's Roundup® and its active ingredient Glyphosat is safe. Following on from her 2008 investigative documentary "The World according to Monsanto", the filmmaker Marie-Monique Robin shows in her new film that Roundup® is even more dangerous than hitherto feared. The "all-killer" - so the epitome of the product in the Spanish - poisoned soils, plants, animals and humans, for it is everywhere: in the water, in the air, in the rain, in the earth and in our food. In addition, glyphosate is not only carcinogenic but also a hormone-active substance, a potent antibiotic and a chelating agent that binds trace elements. The film reveals the catastrophic consequences of these characteristics and shows stirring images of victims in the USA, Argentina, France and Sri Lanka; also numerous scientists are heard. The thread of the documentary is the symbolic process of October 2016 in The Hague at the international Monsanto tribunal, where a citizens' initiative accused the seed conglomerate of ecocide and crimes against humanity. The outcome of the process is a legal review which may lead to the recognition of "ecocide" as an element of international law.
