"Die Rote Linie" (The Red Line) tells the protest against the destruction of the Hambach forest and the resistance against lignite mining from the point of view of various groups who first stand alone and then together against the energy giant RWE. A local David vs. Goliath story is inextricably linked to the globally relevant themes of climate change, energy policy and the civil protest movement. The Hambach Forest has become a symbol of resistance to energy policy. The disputes over the clearing of the forest in autumn 2018 have shown how urgent the discussion about an earlier lignite phase-out is for many people. "Die Rote Linie" observes, accompanies and intervenes. Besides we experience the emergence of a citizen movement, and discuss the question, when the red line is crossed and starting from which point humans engage themselves over the personal concern.
"Die rote Linie" is a highly relevant and astonishing film. It shows the influence of man on the environment, the destruction of nature for energy production, but also the influence of man in the fight against destruction. The film is therefore not entirely negative, but also allows a hopeful outlook.
The dramaturgy of the film is successful and it is both emotionally and intellectually stimulating. The statements are supported by facts and figures and backed up with empirical examples. " Die rote Linie" shows options for action and teaches the responsibility of each individual to protect nature.
Finally, the production value rounds off the thoroughly positive impression the film makes. Image and statement always fit together, the argumentation is coherent and comprehensible, editing, camera work and film music are convincing.
" Die rote Linie" was chosen for the official programme of the Film for the Earth Festival 2019.
