Bruno Manser - Laki Penan

Bruno Manser from Basel lived from 1984 to 1990 with the Penan, the people of the jungle of Sarawak (Borneo). He learned their language and acquired their culture. The Penan accepted Manser as one of their own and called him Laki Penan, the Penan man. When the first bulldozers appeared and began the planned logging of the rainforest, Manser drew attention to the ecological and human disaster through spectacular actions that elicited an international response, creating powerful enemies ... In the spring of 2000, on a secret journey to the Penan, he disappeared without a trace.

Director Christoph Kühn ("Nicolas Bouvier", "22 Hospital Street") follows in Bruno Manser's footsteps into the jungle of Sarawak. The Penan who became Manser's second family have their say: They tell of their shared adventures and fears, Manser's battles with giant snakes, his encounters with ghosts - and his ability to unite the Penan in resistance to the loggers and police. The result is a surprising, holistic picture of the passionate naturalist, mystic and romantic, who was also an angry environmentalist and human rights activist.
